It was so hard not being at Comic Con last year! But I'm heading back next week and couldn't be more excited! I'd love to re-connect with old friends and meet as many new people as possible! Let's high-five, discuss Wizard Rock and complain about movies together!

Best place to find me is at the Comics Bakery booth in Small Press L-06. I'll be sharing the table with John Green,  Marion Vitus and an amazing illustrator named Amanda Sartor.

And what about Raina Telgemeier? She's be at the Flight Comics booth (#2235), which will have a special Scholastic/Graphix section (featuring Kazu Kibuishi and Jake Parker!). I'll also be swinging by there from time to time since I've got a story in Flight Volume 7!

FRIDAY: Raina and I will be drawing at the Cartoon Art Museum Booth for their annual Sketch-A-Thon!
3 – 4 PM
Booth #1930

SUNDAY: Raina, John and I will also be doing an interactive comics drawing panel called:
Kids Draw!
12 - 1 PM
Room 30CDE

It will be fun for kids and adults of all ages. We'll be doing improv comics based on people in the audience and their creative suggestions. Bring your friends!

May 18th is the book store release of Zuko's Story, the prequel manga to THE LAST AIRBENDER. Co-written with the brilliant Alison Wilgus :iconaliwildgoose: and illustrated by the amazing Nina Matsumoto :iconspacecoyote: this book sets up events in the film but ALSO expand on many things introduced in the TV Series (of which we are all huge nerds). The manga is sorta like an "inter-dimensional bridge" where the movie and show universe start to bleed into each other. So, hopefully Avatar fans will appreciate all the hard work we put into it and catch all the little nods and easter eggs we included.

There is an exclusive preview of the comic over at MTV Splash Page:

BONUS: You can listen to Alison and I talking about the Zuko manga and also the film adaptation manga (that comes out in June) over at the Avatar Portalcast:

Paul from the wizard rock band, Harry and the Potters asked me to help find artist friends to contribute a few pieces of fan art to a worthy cause. If you have some extra drawing time over the holidays and can draw some Harry Potter characters (specifics below) it would be a great help!

Check out the message below:

This is Paul DeGeorge of the band Harry and the Potters writing to invite you to participate in a very special and unique fundraiser for an extraordinary non-profit organization.

A few years back, I helped co-found a group called the Harry Potter Alliance.  When the adults and politicians of the magical world fail to address the concerns of the day, Harry and his friends start a student activist group called Dumbledore's Army.  The Harry Potter Alliance is essentially a Dumbledore's Army for the real world.  By drawing parallels between the muggle and magical worlds, we are able to harness the creativity, passion and enthusiasm of thousands of Harry Potter fans in a completely new approach to civic engagement.  The HPA works with a number of partner NGOs on on a variety of campaigns around global warming, equal rights, poverty, genocide and self-empowerment.  We now have over 60 active chapters in high schools, colleges and communities across the world, and an almost entirely volunteer based staff working over 300 hours per week!  We've sent thousands of books to youth villages in Rwanda, called thousands of voters for the recent equal rights effort in Maine, and raised over $10,000 for civilian protection in Darfur.

That's the "About Us" kind of spiel, but in all honesty, this is quite an incredible organization that I feel honored to be a part of.  It's basically a first-of-its-kind approach to activism, and it's really producing amazing results, especially by getting young people involved and socially conscious.  JK Rowling herself praised our mission on her website, writing "I am honored and humbled that Harry's name has been given to such an extraordinary campaign, which really does exemplify the values for which Dumbledore's Army fought in the books."

Another unique aspect of the Harry Potter Alliance is that it's almost entirely supported by the Harry Potter fan community.  This is made possible by donations, benefit shows, and charitable music compilations.  This year, I'm hoping to expand the fundraising offerings through a project called "Adopt a Hypothetical Orphan Wizard Baby."

People interested in the program will be able to choose from 3 different Hypothetical Orphan Wizard Babies: Harry Potter, Teddy Lupin, and Tom Riddle.  For an adoption fee of $50, these proud new parents will receive quarterly updates over the course of the 2010 calendar year.  Each update will contain an original, hand-drawn 4" x 6" portrait of their selected character, along with a status update and other goodies.  So it's basically an art subscription club based around portraits of Harry Potter characters.  All proceeds from this endeavor will be donated to the Harry Potter Alliance.

And that's where YOU come in!  We are now recruiting artists to generate these character portraits!  We are hoping to offer between 50-100 of these Hypothetical Orphans for adoption, and to do that we'll need four times as many portraits.  Do you think that you'll be able to help us by providing us with some of the original art for this project?  As this is a benefit effort, we're not able to offer you any compensation, but if you want a Harry and the Potters CD or something, let me know and I'll get it in the mail for you.  I've got loads of em in my parent's basement.

The MINIMUM commitment we are asking from artists is that they choose one of the characters (Harry, Teddy, or little baby Voldemort), and draw four different portraits of that character at four different points in their life.  Specifically, we decided to have the portraits be from age 1, age 6, age 11, and age 16.  This way, the status updates can match the portraits.

Should you choose to LEVEL UP your contributor status, you can submit additional sets of portraits of the other characters being offered - or even multiple portraits of the same character.  This is certainly encouraged since the more sets we can offer, the more money we will raise!  Did I mention that those who submit multiple portrait sets score bonus points with McGonagall - amazing, but true!

All works should be original, with the character's name and age, and the artist's name included on the back of the work.

You can see some of Alec Longstreth's sample work here at our pre-launch, sample website.

We are looking to have all this art generated by Dec 31, 2009, so that we can make our first mailing at some point in January 2010.

Still confused?  Here are some FAQs.

Q: So you want my original, hand-drawn art right?
A: Yes

Q: At what size?
A: 4" x 6" please.  Vertical or horizontally oriented, your choice.

Q: How are these distributed to these so-called "adoptive parents."
A: When those "adoptive parents" sign up, they choose which character they would like to adopt.   At the time of each mailing, they are mailed a randomly-chosen portrait of their character from the available pool.  Kind of like a Secret Santa with each mailing.  So the parents never know which artist will be doing their next character portrait.  This way no one will get locked in to a particular artist they may not necessarily be fond of.

Q: Who is your favorite Harry Potter character?
A: Dumbledore

Q: How many of each character will you sell?
A: Only as many as are generated by the artists.  So if we only get 4 artists to submit Tom Riddle portrait sets, then we will only allow 4 people to adopt Tom Riddle.

Q: Do I get paid for this?
A: Lots of people donate their time and money to support the HPA.  We are asking that you consider donating some of your time and artistic skill to help keep this incredible organization going.  But like I said, if you want a CD, just let me know.

Q: Whoa, this Harry Potter Alliance business sounds cool.  Where can I learn more?
A:  [link]

Q: This is an awesome idea!  I already did my drawings!   Where do I mail them?
A: Wow! Cool!  So glad you are pumped on it!  You can mail those to:
Paul DeGeorge
26A Bar Neck Rd.
Woods Hole, MA 02543

Q: What do you plan to do with your band now that the book series is over?
A: Adopt a Hypothetical Orphan Wizard Baby!

Did that answer all your questions?  If not, feel free to email me.  Actually, all interested parties should shoot me an email to let me know you're on board and what level of commitment you think you can make.

I'm really psyched about this project and I hope you may be equally pumped to be a part of it.  Thanks for reading and thanks for helping!

X-Men: Misfits is finally in stores everywhere!

mutants

So far, the advanced word is good!

Active Anime:
"At last an Original English Language manga (OEL) that gets it bang on right! And it's X-Men Misfits. As a diehard X-Men fan (I collected the comics since the early 80s) I was curious but skeptical on how an OEL version would revision it. The story and art surprised and thrilled me. It manages to work in enough details about the various Marvel mutants to please hard core fans while delighting them with the new takes on many, many favorite names."

Publishers Weekly:
"Telgemeier and Roman deliver a delightful script that will appeal to old fans while being friendly toward new readers or fans of the X-Men films. The art by Anzu (The Reformed) is over-the-top shojo parody, with lots of screentone and flowers."

I hope you'll give it a shot, and have us much fun reading it as we did making it!

Mutant fistbumps to my collaborators, :iconanzu-manga: & :icongoraina: and to our editor, Tricia as well as everyone at Del Rey and Marvel!

I've never subscribed to any political text messaging services (not even that famous Obama one), and I've never given my cell phone # out to any politics-related sites. And yet I got sent this alarming text message a few weeks ago:

Nothing like ridiculous rumors and a good smear campaign to make me lose complete respect for John McCain--or at least the people who are "helping" his campaign. And considering several of my family members still don't trust Barack Obama because they believe he is a Muslim... you can see why I get depressed about how much society still has to evolve. Because seriously, even if he WAS a Muslim, that shouldn't matter...as long as he's an AMERICAN Muslim!

Now, I said lose respect, because even though I disagree with many of his policies and distrust the people he surrounds himself with, I personally like John McCain.  Contrary to talking points, he is a great CELEBRITY. I thought he was a brilliant guest on Saturday Night Live, and hilarious on countless talk show appearances. And on the serious side, I give credit to anyone who serves in the military and suffers through the torture he went through. I don't even buy that he's BFF with the Bush administration. In fact, I originally hoped McCain would beat W, eight years ago when they campaigned against each other--and was disgusted by the smear campaign that Bush  used against him! Yes, I would invite McCain over for a barbecue, but I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM this year. I understand why people might have voted for the OLD McCain, but he's completely lost it.

I HATE that for the past 8 years, the "Republican Machine" has made it a crime to flaunt intelligence. They always try to tear down people who come across as too much of a know-it-all (see the attacks on Gore).

I want my presidents to be smarter than me! I don't want to have a beer with them!

I'm certainly not "in the tank for Obama." I'm actually one of those "Registered Independents" you hear about in the news. I like to have complete freedom to make my decisions at the last minute. I've voted for the Green Party and various other 3rd party candidates as well as candidates via the Working Families Party ballot option. I'd love to see an end to the corporate-controlled 2-party system. I want to vote for a true anti-war president. But I know that's not going to happen any time soon.

I like Obama as a person (and think his wife is AWESOME), but I don't agree with some of the stances he has to take just to get elected (like revenge for 9/11 and ending the Iraq war to start BETTER wars). But realistically, that seems to be the deal with the two major candidates: they can't really be themselves. They have to do what they have to do to win.

I've always hated the phrase "lesser of two evils." So in this case, I'm trying to look at something more positive. And that's the message and spirit that the candidates evoke. Political pundits criticize Obama for  taking his time and being too complex in his answers. He doesn't give pandering soundbites like "I'm going to destroy evil." And that ultimately is why I'm going to vote for him. Because Obama not only promotes HOPE, but he also promotes RATIONAL THINKING--which I am a fan of. He will inspire young people to know that it's okay to be smart and thoughtful. And that it's healthy to eat arugula!

I don't think McCain will inspire anyone or anything. He wants to be Reagan. He is a voice of the the past, rather than focus on the future. And the future is the way go.  I believe in the future. That's why I'll vote for Obama.

I will be all over the San Diego Comic Con! Here's where to look:

Base of Operations: The Comics Bakery

We’ll have a sampling of comics, zines, T-shirts, buttons, original art, handshakes, and hi-fives.

***I"ll give a free button and/or Quicken Forbidden comic to anyone who watches my DA account or can prove they are a huge Avatar fan. :)

Moving Castle: FLIGHT comics
The booth number is: 1228 and it will be HUGE! Volume 5 (which has a story by me!) debuts there and should fly like hotcakes with jetpacks.

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 3) is Free Comic Book Day!
So if you walk into any participating comic shop you can pick up an assortment of cool books for free!
Check out the FCBD website for more info on stores near you and all the awesome comics that will be free of charge.

NYCC, X-men Manga, & Oregon

Thu Apr 24, 2008, 9:53 AM

A billion thanks to everyone who came out to the NYCC...especially those who came to the Friday Nick Mag panel or swung by the Comics Bakery to say hello. I'm still buzzing on the great time. Special props must be given to the amazing puppets by Kevin Coppa  aka alternatecoppa.

I posted a bunch of photos and a con summary here: [link]

There are links to all the fan stuff we showed here:
[link]

In other big project news...over at About.com there is a report (with photos) from the Del Rey panel at NYCC where they debuted some character designs from the X-Men manga that I am co-writing with my wife, Raina.

"...Then [Del Rey publisher] Dallas Middaugh showed Anzu's version of Hank McCoy, a.k.a. Beast, and audible gasps and giggles rippled through the crowd. "Anzu's version of Beast shows how far we've re-imagined the basic premise of the X-Men story," said Middaugh as he showed off a very Totoro-esque, cute 'n cuddly badger version of the blue n' furry hero who's one of the professors at the Academy. Can't wait to hear the fanboy blogosphere let it rip on this one -- but it's a bold move that shows how much Del Rey is committed to appealing to the tastes of manga readers versus catering to the superhero crowd."

To that end, Blog @ Newsarama has clearer versions of designs along with LOTS of feedback from readers.

Of course, I'm a big fan of Anzu's designs and think they reflect the story really well! But I've also read the script. ;)

This is the first time I've seen the designs for Wolverine (he'll appear in a separate book than the one Raina and I are writing) and thought they looked cool, too! I like the direction they are going for and think it shoud work really well as a action-based shonen series. Looking at the criticism, it's clear fans still expect the characters to reflect the pre-existing versions they are familiar with. Which for the most part will not be the case.

"Del Rey's approach was to ask the authors to strip the premise of the X-Men story down to its essentials, and start from scratch from there. These creators were freed up to explore different aspects of these iconic characters and put them in manga-inspired situations, without the burden of decades of Marvel Universe continuity."

The main thing Raina and I are hoping for is to write a book that captures the spirit of everything we love about the X-Men mixed with the expressive opportunities of manga storytelling. There will be more focus on the emotions of the characters and also a lot more light-hearted humor...and chibis!  The goal is a book that is fun! And thus you get Beast as an overstuffed badger who walks like a penguin! ;)

Last note:

I’ll be at the Stumptown comics fest in Portland Oregon this weekend! It's an amazing alternative comics and art festival that has so many great people attending and doesn't cost that much to get in. It should be super-rad!

Just a quick status report post!

My productivity has really fallen behind as I’ve been dealing with an assortment of health issues. Everything from a tear in my wrist, to hospitalization for bacterial colitis, and non-related throat/ear infectiond that are currently in relapses mode.  If you want read more about sad stuff like that you can check out the post over on my livejournal: [link]

But yeah basically an assault on my body that has forced me to loose 2 weeks of work, say “no” to a lot of people, and cancel several fun events or comic related appearances. As someone who loves to multi-task and take on more than he can handle…it’s been very hard to “just relax and take it easy” when deadlines are looming!

But I’m still planning a billion things for the New York Comic Con and am thankful to have awesome friends and co-workers keeping things moving forward.

The Comics Bakery, my collective of artist friends will have a booth on the main floor, and will be the biggest (most expensive) set up we’ve ever assembled. Hopefully people will check it out our tasty selection of comics, t-shirts and other swag.

Nickelodeon will be at the NYCC in full force with a ton of panels, a killer booth, costumed characters, creator signings etc. etc. I will make a separate post soon about all the Avatar and Nick Magazine goodness. But please know that the Friday Avatar Fandom Panel will be especially awesome, thanks to the powers of Alison Wilgus. No Mike and Bryan won’t be at the one, but Rufftoon will! And we’ll be spotlighting so many great fan works that your head might explode with glee.

Speaking of fandoms, I got to see a great documentary called We Are Wizards that everyone who has ever been a fan of anything should go see! But it’s an indy film so you gotta spread the word so it can play in your town!

OTHER SIDE NOTE:

There's a funny comic about me in the April issue of Nickelodeon Magazine. It's has me being mean to cosplayer at a comic con and paying the price. There's a scan of it here:

This issue also features a new Avatar comic, an illustrated interview with the creator of "Chowder" and lots of funny stuff for cartoon lovers and shippers!

Need FUNNY Avatar fan stuff for NYCC

Thu Feb 28, 2008, 10:04 AM
Consider this a call out:
Nick Magazine would love to show/debut fan-made things at NYCC…if they are FUNNY, short, and PG rated!

Wouldn’t it be great if there was…
-A short/funny tribute video that covers the fandom as a whole or plays to the anticipation of the big finale.
-A well edited compilation of the coolest Avatar cosplay all in one place set to music.
-Something similar with the best of the best in fan art (or this could be mixed with the cosplay!)
-Short fan made videos/confessionals where people (or puppets, or cartoons) explain what they love about Avatar and/or why other people should watch it.
-a compilation of Avatar AMVs (Animated Music Videos). There’s so many already out there and we probably won’t have time to show more than 1-2. But it would be even better if somehow there was a compilation/best of edited as a 3-5 minute clip reel.
-Original parodies that are PG (or slightly PG-13). Think: Harry Potter Puppet Pals & Zuko The fire lord (we love those!)
-Bender-rock: Musical acts inspired by Avatar.
-Skits, live reenactments, you name it. Could be on video or if you are going to be at NYCC contact us and perform it live on stage!

Reply to this post with links! Tell your friends with video cameras, editing software, & puppet making skills!

NOTE: We are not looking for straight up fan art images at the moment—just multi-media compilations.
ALSO: WE CAN NOT guarantee that we will show ANYTHING we are sent!
No promises! But we do hope to do some really fun stuff no matter what. More info soon!
